The Pre-radiography Certificate of Achievement program prepares the student to develop the foundational knowledge in radiography and transfer to Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) Associate in Science degree in Radiography and the California State University Northridge baccalaureate degree.  

The program is a partnership with the SBCC radiography program to provide this career and technical education access to the students of the northern Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.

The program includes courses that meet the general education (GE) requirements for the SBCC associate degree and the lower division GE requirements of CSU Northridge baccalaureate program.  

Upon program completion, the graduate meets the requirements for the SBCC associate degree in radiography program. 

The Pre-radiography Certificate will eventually lead to career opportunities as a radiologic technologist in hospitals, imaging centers, and clinics. With further education and training in specific radiographical technologies, there are career options in ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) scans, and in areas of quality control, research, and management.   

The pathway below represents an efficient and effective course taking sequence for this program. Individual circumstances might require some changes to this pathway. It is always recommended that you meet with an academic counselor to develop a personalized educational plan.

    Human Physiology
    A study of the functions and interactions of human cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. Metabolic processes, negative feedback mechanisms, and homeostatic regulation are investigated in both lecture and laboratory sections. Emphasis is on the interaction of physiological processes responsible for the maintenance of normal body functions. Lecture: 3 hours weekly. Lab 3 hours weekly.

        Radiography and Health Care

        The course provides an introduction and overview and serves as an orientation for individuals interested in a career in diagnostic medical imaging. Students are introduced to the various career paths in medical imaging and the fundamental concepts that are taught in a medical imaging program.

                  Introduction to Radiography

                  The course provides an introduction to basic radiographic imaging concepts, terminology, patient care and other entry level topics. Specific attention is given to the radiography program's policies and procedures, and the clinical workbook.

                            Core Elective - Pre-radiography Certificate (Cert.)

                            An introduction to medical terminology for body structure, body systems, and diagnostic work. Covers prefixes, suffixes, word roots, and combined word forms. Includes instruction on spelling, definition, and pronunciation.  

                            A study of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic testing and treatment modalities. The course is not open to students who are currently enrolled or have received credit for MB 305.
